Noninvasive ventilation (NIV), is an alternative to IMV in the management of hypoxia and respiratory fatigue of these immunocompromised patients.
Invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) significantly increases mortality rate in patients with acute respiratory failure ranging between 30% and 90%. Pneumonia is caused by several microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi. The advancements in drug therapy, transplantations programs, and management of these patients have increased survival of these immunocompromised patients however, secondary infections are a major cause for concern and respiratory complications remain the main cause of morbidity and mortality. Immunodeficiency has different causes classified as primary or secondary.
